The Somerset Herald: (Somerset, Pa.) April 5, 1876
Latrobe has had a sensation. The heroine, if the chief actress in so sad a story may
be thus designated, is Mrs. Bell McCusker, who only three short months ago, gave her
young life into the keeping of one John McCusker, of Latrobe. After a short season
of domestic bliss, a dark cloud of unhappiness settled over the horizon of her life.
Her husband was not all that in her devoted love she had imagined him to be, and she
soon become weary of her existence with him. The avenue of death opened up to her as
the only channel of escape from an unhappy married life, and the poor young woman
embraced it gladly. Going to a drug store in the village, she related a plausible
story of a sister's sickness, and prevailed upon the clerk to accommodate her with
two grains of morphia, though it is contrary to the regulations of the establishment
to sell the poisonous drug unless the order be accompanied by a physician's
prescription. She left the store with the poison in her hand, and immediately upon
entering the street, commenced taking the fatal drug. Fortunately, she did not
understand the nature of the poison, and took such a quantity that it soon sickened
her. She became so weak that she was forced to enter the house of a neighbor, and
asked to lie down; and before the lady could assist her, she fell over into spasms.
Two skillful physicians were hurriedly sent for, and by administering the proper
emetics, her life was saved. Sad, indeed, must have been the experience and
burdensome the load that would cause a young bride to attempt a headlong rush for
shelter, into an unknown world, Johnstown Tribune
