Will of John STEWART, Passyunk Twp., Phila. Co., Phila., PA; 1789, File #138,

     In the Name of God Amen -- I John Stewart of Passyunk Township in the 
County of Philadelphia being Sick and weak in Body but of sound and disposing 
mind memory and understanding praised be the lord for the same and all other 
Mercies so bountifully bestowed on me and not knowing how soon it may please the 
Lord to call em out of this transitory World have thought fit to make my 
Testament and last Will in manner following that is to say, first I recommend my 
Soul into the Hands of my merciful redeemer Jesus Christ in full confidence that 
through his holy merits I shall obtain full remission and forgiveness of all my 
Sins and Iniquities, and my Body I recommend to the Earth in full and certain 
hope of a joyful resurrection at the last Day to eternal Life.  And as touching 
my Worldly Estate and Effects wherewith it hath pleased the Lord to bless me, I 
dispose of them in manner following to wit, It is my Will that my just Debts and 
Funeral expenses be fully paid and satisfied by my Executors herein after named 
as soon after my decease as possible -- Item It is my will that my Goods 
Chattels and Effects whatsoever; I shall die Possessed of shall be left in the 
Possession of my Dear Wife Martha (an Inventory and appraisement being first 
thereof made) during the Time she remains my Widow, and Educates, Cloaths [sic] 
and maintains my Children without any Charge to them or my Estate, and in case 
of Marriage and necessity requires of spending the sd. Estate she shall have the 
One third part of my said Estate and no more, and the other two thirds shall be 
taken Care o by my Executors for my Children.  Item I give and bequeath unto my 
Son John my Watch, Silver Shoe Buckles, Silver Stock Buckle and my New Beaver 
Hat, Item I give and bequeath unto my Brother James Stewart all my Worsted and 
Woollen [sic] Wearing Apparel (my Great Coat only excepted) Item I give and 
bequeath unto my Cousin Meomia Daughter of my said Brother James Stewart the Sum 
of Three Pounds Gold or Silver Money provided she remains with my Widow until 
she arrives at the age of eighteen Years and her Conduct is such as shall be 
approved off [sic] by my Executors -- And the rest and residue of my Estate 
whatsoever and wheresoever I give devise and bequeath unto my three Children 
Mary, John and Martha and to their Heirs and Assigns for ever to be equally 
divided between them Share and Share alike as they severally arrive at lawful 
Age or enter into Wedlock which ever shall first happen, and if either of my 
said Children shall happen to Die in their minority unmarried and intestate the 
Share o Shares of such shall descend in equal Shares to my other Children or 
their legal representatives  Lastly I do hereby annul and revoke all former 
Wills by me made and declare this only to be my Testament and last Will, and do 
nominate and appoint my beloved Wife Executrix and my esteemed Friend Fredirick 
[sic] Meyerle of Passyunk Township aforesaid Farmer Executor thereof and 
Guardian of my Children with full power to bind my Son to such Trade as he shall 
make Choice off [sic] when he arrives at sufficient age -- In Witness whereof I 
the said John Stewart the Testator have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the 
twentyseventh Day of July in the Year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and 
eighty Nine.

Signed Sealed published and declared by John Stewart the Testator as and for his 
Testament and last will in the presence of us and in his presence at his request 
and in the presence of each other have subscribed our Names as Witnesses 
hereunto  The Words "And necessity requires of Spending the said Estate["] 
between 24 & 25 lines being first interlined.
