Will of James S. Mason, 1888

#286, Will of James S. Mason (James Servetus Mason Jr.) abridged by
jpeppler@duke.edu who would like to correspond with other researchers of
this family of Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The wife
frequently mentioned was Ann Jane Graham, 1812-1880, daughter of William
Graham and Elizabeth Entwistle.

Item 1 I direct the payment of my just debts...
Item 2 I give 500 shares of the capital stock of James S. Mason
Companies in trust in 4 equal portions to my 4 daughters [see below].
Item 3 obliterated.
Item 4 I give to Mrs. Elizabeth Rumer my late wife's sister the sum of
$2,500. I give to Mrs. Elizabeth Harley (wife of Jacob Harley and niece
of my said wife) $2,500. And to Ellen Makin, also a nice of my late
wife, I give $2,000.
Item 5 I give to my executors the sum of $12,000 in trust to my niece
Alice M. H. Benton and at her death in trust to Frank N. Benton provided
he shall then have atteined the age of 25 years.
Item 6 I give my executors $2,000 to pay unto my late wife's niece Jane
Mitchell so long as she shall remain covert ...
Item 7 I give my executors $2,000 the interest to be paid to Mrs. Mary
R. Graham, wife of James R. Graham a nephew of my late wife
Item 8 I give to my friend Charles S. Bale $1,500. In consideration of
his faithful services rendered to me during his lifetime by John W.
Matlack now deceased I give to his wife and children $2,000
Items 9 & 10 charities
Item 11 All the rest of my estate I bequeath unto my six children viz:
Richard S. Mason, Alfred Heywood Mason, Elizabeth G. Clapp, Alice M.
Paul, Ellen A. Withers and Mary I. Wilson in equal parts.

Lastly I appoint my sons Richard S. Mason and Alfred Heywood Mason and
my son-in-law Henry S. Paul to be the executors. I nominate and appoint
my son-in-law Hanson L. Withers to be an executor at the first vacancy;
Mayland Cuthbert for the second vacancy; my grandson Heywood Mason Paul
for the third vacancy.

Witnesses James P. Townsend, J. B. Townsend Jr., W. T. Elliott. Proved
February 27 1888
