Bates, 54, of RD 1, Ligonier died suddenly at his home, Monday, March 29, 1976. Mr. Bates was born January 20, 1922 in Ligonier Township, a son of the late Oscar and May (Ferry) Bates. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Darlington, was a veteran of the US Navy having served during World War II and was employed at Latrobe Forge and Springs Company, Latrobe. He is survived by his widow, G. Ruth (Johnson) Bates; five children, Richard E. Jr. of RD 3, Ligonier, Roger C. of the US Navy, Cynthia K., Tamela M. and Phillip A., all at home; also two grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters, Grace McCauley of Latrobe, Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Hammann of Shreveport, Louisiana, Mrs. Arthur (Edith) Halferty and Hazel Bates, both of RD 2, Ligonier, Mrs. David (Mary) McCullough of Monroeville, Eugene of Latrobe and Robert of RD 4, Latrobe. Friends are being received at the Owen Wolford Funeral Home, East Main Street, Ligonier today (Wednesday) from 3-5 and 7-9. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the funeral home tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Herbert Brant, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Darlington in charge.
