Carns, 87, of Latrobe RD 8 died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born May 5, 1913, in Ligonier, a son of the late Lemon and Catherine (Heiple) Carns. Prior to his retirement, he worked at the former Latrobe Lumber Co. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army Flying Tigers. He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Youngstown, having served many years on the church council, and belonged to several local bowling leagues. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile A. Goodman Carns; two brothers, Louis and Clyde, and a sister, Loucetta Shirey. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Barry (Linda) Banker, and two granddaughters, Becki Banker and Mrs. Mark (Bethany) McNeil, all of Latrobe RD 8; three sisters, Edna Madill and Lillian Ayers, both of Latrobe, and Gladys Stillwagon of Connellsville; a brother, Edgar G. of Ligonier, and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Gaut-Bacha Funeral Home Inc., Pleasant Unity. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Youngstown, with the Rev. David P. von Schlichten officiating. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, PO Box 356, Youngstown, PA 15696.
