William J. Chafin, 93, of Latrobe (formerly of Ridillatown) died Wednesday, Jan.
16, 2002, in Latrobe Care Center. He was born Aug. 8, 1908, in Pikeville, Ky., a
son of the late Harry H. and Luella (Davis) Chafin. William graduated from
Marshall College in Huntington, W.Va., with a bachelor of science degree in
science and received his master's degree from West Virginia University. Prior to
his retirement, he was a teacher of biology and chemistry for Greater Latrobe
School District and also had worked at Toyad Corp. near Latrobe. He was a member
of Bethany United Methodist Church, Latrobe. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his wife, Zola Shirey Chafin, and two sisters, Blanche Lou
and Mary Lee Stanley. He is survived by five nieces, Rita Ann Kern of New
Stanton, whom he and Zola raised, Elaine Werkheiser of Norristown, Paula
Helmbold of Tempe, Ariz., Justine Kern of Royersford and Pam Herbert of Boulder,
Colo.; several great-nieces and great-nephews, including William R. Kern (and
wife, Artigail) and Lorraine Shroyer (and husband, Leroy), as well as several
great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, including Dorothy Ann and Ronald
Kern and Dimitri Shroyer. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 3 to
5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Gaut-Bacha Funeral Home Inc., Pleasant Unity, where
funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. August B. Twigg
officiating. Interment will follow in Hillview Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
