Y. "Dicky" was born March 13, 1950, in Wilkinsburg and baptized at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Darlington. He grew up on his parents' farm on Route 259 and graduated from Ligonier Valley Senior High School in 1968. He also graduated from trucking school and served two years in the U. S. Marine Corps. He was employed for many years at Standard Steel In Latrobe until he relocated to Liverpool, N. Y. There he worked for 11 years for CTS and most recently was employed at Brooks Associates in Macedon as an industrial machinist. He was a former member of Ligonier Valley Jaycees and the Waterford Sportsman's Association. Dick was a loving husband and father and an avid sportsman. He enjoyed going on hunting and fishing excursions with his sons, friends and family members and spent a lot of time at their hunting camp in Tionesta. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard E. Bates Sr., and his stepfather, Frank I. Crowe. In addition to his mother, Gloria Ruth Johnson Bates Crowe of Ligonier, he is survived by his wife of 26 years, Helen Jane Goodman Bates, and two sons, Nathan Christopher (and his fiancee, Amie Vicki) and Shawn Richard of Macedon; two brothers, Rodger C. of Saratoga Springs, N. Y., and Phillip A. of Fort Eustis, Va.; two sisters, Cynthia I. Sheehy (and her husband, Michael) and Tameia M. Corcoran (and her husband, Jack), all of Ligonier; many nieces and nephews; his stepsister, M. Jane Sieasman of Ligonier; six stepbrothers, James Crowe of Arizona, Richard Crowe, Donald Crowe and Mark Crowe of Ligonier, Jeffery Crowe of Huntingdon and Jonathan Crowe of Windgap. Private viewing will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, in Payne and Murphy Funeral Home, Macedon. A public memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the funeral home.
