Macon Telegraph [GA] August 27, 1880
In April 1880 in Clay County, Alabama, Henry W. Smith attacked Jas. A. White,
then sheriff of the county and marshal of Ashland, using his knife so freely tha
the sheriff was laid up with his wounds for some weeks. Smith was indicted, but
before the trial left his bondsmen with the bag to hold. Recently White, now ex
-sheriff, learned that his assailant was farming in Campbell County, in this
State. He procured a requisition and came to Atlanta, obtained an executive
warrant, proceeded to Campbell County, and last night arrested his man. He
brought him to Atlanta today and left on the afternoon train for Alabama. The
two, notwithstanding their former present relations, were making the trip
together quietly without the use of handcuffs. White stated that he was going
through without using handcuffs but did not know how he would get through the
night.
