Ashland Progress July 27, 1939
Herbert Cambron, age 27, an escaped convict, was arrested last Monday at
Clairmont Springs by Deputy W. C. Brooks and brought to the Ashland jail for safe
keeping. Cambron was convicted in the Circuit court of Etowah County in 1932 on a
charge of murder and sentenced to Kilby prison for a term of 40 years. He escaped
two years ago and for the past 12 months had resided in the Clairmont Springs
community. During the fertilizer hauling season this year Cambron operated a
truck hauling fertilizer from Montgomery to Ashland, passing Kilby prison twice
daily. Sheriff Jordan and Deputy Brooks carried Cambron back to Kilby Tuesday
afternoon where, according to his sentence, he will remain for the next 35 years.
