The Carnesville Herald And Advance June 24, 1948
Sheriff T.W. Andrews was making a trip to Macon Monday, when he saw a hitchhiker
frantically waving for a ride just beyond Royston on Highway 29. Being of an
accommodating nature, he stopped his car and told the man to get in. When he saw
the sheriff, the hitchhiker hesitated and was on the point of leaving in a hurry,
but the sheriff insisted that he get in the car, stating that he had been wanting
to give him a ride for over a year.

The hitchhiker was John Henry Cothran, wanted in connection with a stolen car
belonging to Mr. J.D. Harris, of Lavonia. Sheriff Andrews left the prisoner in the
jail at Athens while he proceeded on to Macon. As he came back he picked up the
man and brought him back to the Carnesville jail to await trial.
