WILL OF JOHN WHARTON 
(abt 1774-1848)

In the name of God Amen I John Wharton of the county of Mifflin & township 
of  Wayne in the State of Pennsylvania farmer being very sick and weak in 
body but of sound mind & memory & understanding but considering the 
uncertanty of this transitory life do make & publish this my last will and 
testament in manner & form following to wit.  Principally first of all I 
commit my immortal soul into the hands of God who gave it and my body to the 
earth to be buried in a decent & Christain like manner at discretion of my 
Executors here in after named  - and as to such worldly Estate where with it 
has pleased God to help me in this life I give & dispose of the same in the 
following manner to wit give & bequeath unto my son William one Sorrel horse 
five years old now on the farm & four head of (?) om (cattle of his own 
raising-viz. one milk cow one three year old heiffer one two year old steer  
& one Spring Calf making the four head) and also I give & direct my 
Executors to pay to my son William before named fifty dollars for each and 
every year he has serviced me from the age of twenty one up to my deseas and 
to be made equal with the rest of my children after receiving the above sum 
for services & property above mentioned with one bed & bedding I give & 
bequeath to my daughter Ellen one bed & bedding with cooking utentials one 
chest & table & also one cow & calf out of my movable property with dishes 
and sufficient  to furnish a table and further I give unto my son William & 
my daughter Ellen which now lives with me Hay feed & bread sufficient for 
them selves  & there beast until the first of next August 1849 with meat 
potatoes & all kinds of vegatables &-and all the rest of my personal 
property not before mentioned to be sold by Executors to the best advantage 
and to be applied to the payment of my just and charges against my estate.  
I further bequest unto my son Samuel an Equal share of the proceeds of my 
real & personal Estate with the rest of my children after charging his 
ninety dollars for one set of smith tools & one horse which he got after his 
marriage from me & also all my Real Estate to be sold by my Executors as 
soon as it can be done conveniently to advantage and after the payment of 
legal debts and charges  & after paying to my Son in law William Booth for 
the support and raising of my daughter Jane's children desceased  the sum of 
one hundred dollars to be paid as follows fifty dollars to be paid as soon 
as convenient after sale of the property and the balance in two equal annual 
payments there after and further I bequest unto my son in law William Decker 
for the support & caring of the children of my ? ? Catherine Ann deceased 
the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid as above mentioned fifty dollars 
to be paid as soon after the sale of the property as convenient & the 
balance in two equal annual payments there after & after which all the above 
sums mentioned that be discharged with debts & legal charges & then my four 
surviving children viz Samuel, William ? & Ellen is to be made equal out of 
the balance or residue of the proceeds of my Estate & And I do constitute 
and a appoint my brother Samuel Wharton & my son William the executors of 
this my last will & testament to do all ? ? is required - In ? ? where of I 
have here unto set my hand and sea l this seventh day of October in the year 
of  our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and forty eight.  /s/ John Wharton
