  Benjamin J. Haywood Dead.

Ex-State Treasurer Benjamin J. Haywood died at Sharon, Pa., last
Thursday morning, after a lingering illness from a complication of
diseases. He was taken sick a year ago with an affection of the liver
and stomach, which culminated in Bright's disease and pulmonary
trouble. He went West last November and returned a month later in a
  very weakened condition.
He continued to perform his duties as cashier in the Treasury at
Harrisburg until December, when he was compelled to take his bed. He
gradually grew weaker, but by extraordinary will power he went to the
department on Christmas eve and distributed gifts to the employees.
His next visit to the department was a month ago, when he was driven to
the Treasury to say good-bye to his associates before starting for
  Sharon.
Stewart Pierce, of Saltsburg, has been acting as cashier of the
Treasury during Mr. Haywood's illness and will probably be appointed
his successor. The Treasury Department was closed until after Mr.
Haywood's funeral out of respect to his memory. His wife, formerly
Miss Lizzie E. Powell, survives him.
