Donald Thomas, Mt. Jewett Hotel Operator, Dies
Donald H. Thomas, 38, of Main St., Mt. Jewett, owner and operator of the
Commercial Hotel at Mt. Jewett, died Tuesday at 4:50 p.m. in the Veterans
Hospital at Erie, where he had been a patient since March 20. He had been in
ill health for the past two years.
Born July 6, 1922, at Bradford, he was a graduate of Smethport High School,
class of 1940, and of Bryant-Stration Commercial College at Buffalo.
He served in the Navy and saw overseas duty in World War II. Discharged as
boatsman's mate in January, 1946, he became associated with his late father,
R.O. Thomas, of the Thomas Chevrolet Garage at Smethport, which he operated
until January, 1960, when he became owner and operator of the Commercial Hotel
Aug 1, 1960.
On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Dorothy (sic) Gustafson of Smethport where the
couple resided until August, 1960.
He is survived by his wife; four sons at home, Donald H. Jr., Daniel L.,
Dennis L., and David M.; his mother, Mrs. R.O. Thomas of Smethport; a brother,
Kenneth of Speedway, Ind.; four nephews and one niece.
A member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church at Smethport, he belonged to Mt.
Jewett Memorial Post Veterans of Foreign Wars and Cleveland Johnson American
Legion Post 574 at Mt. Jewett. He was also a member of Bradford Elks Club and
Smethport Sportsman's Club.
A prayer service will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. in the Fry Funeral
Home, Smethport, followed by the funeral service in St. Luke's Episcopal
Church. The Rev. Arthur B. Cope, rector of the church, will officiate.
Interment will be in McKean Memorial Park at Lafayette. Military rites at
the cemetery will be conducted by a delegation of veterans from Mt. Jewett.
