William John Hess was the great grandson of Conrad 'Konrad' H. Hess, Sr., 1842- 1921, formerly of Annweiler, Rhine Pfalz, Bayern, Germany, who pledged his oath of allegiance in 1866, in Hamilton County, Ohio, then settled in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and died December 28, 1921, at his residence, 2126 Parade Street, in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and of his wife, Elizabeth [a] Schallang Hess, born December 11, 1845, formerly of Annweiler, Rhine Rfalz, Bayern, Germany, who then settled in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, where she died on April 29, 1838, at the age of 92 years, in their residence at 2126 Parade Street, Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA.
