Found Dead

Henry Cress, a Pioneer Resident, Joins the Great Majority

Henry Cress, a pioneer resident of Reno, was found dead this morning at 11
o'clock in his cabin on the creek north of George Becker's residence and a short
distance south of the railroad track. Cress, as he was familiarly called, had
been missing since Sunday night, and as he failed to show up this morning in his
usual haunts, a visit was paid to his cabin, which resulted as above stated.
For many years past Cress has been employed in various capacities by many of our
citizens, and has worked off and on in Hymer's stables. About six years ago he
had a severe attack of typhoid fever, which left him a physical wreck, so much
so that he could not engage in any steady occupation. Of late he has been
drinking freely, and the supposition is that on Sunday night he went home in an
intoxicated condition, and in trying to get into bed, fell and struck his head
against the headboard, sustaining fatal injuries. The condition and position of
the body when found bears out this theory. The head and trunk were on the bed,
and the feet were resting on the floor. The face of the deceased is also cut
and badly bruised and the condition of the wounds indicate that life had been
extinct for a great many hours. An inquest will be held this afternoon, and
to-morrow the funeral will take place. Deceased was a native of Pennsylvania
and was 62 years of age.

Reno Evening Gazette

Died From Natural Causes
The coroner held an inquest last evening over the remains of Henry Cress, who
was found dead in his cabin yesterday morning. The testimony adduced showed
that the deceased had not drank intoxicants for over three months, and the
supposition of friends that he was in an inebriated condition when he died, as
published in yesterday's Gazette, was therefore unwarranted and uncalled for.
The verdict of the jury was that the deceased had died from natural causes.
