F. Cookes, who came to Reno among the first, died last evening at 6 o'clock. He has been ailing for some time, and died of Bright's disease of the kidneys. He has had considerable property in his day, but died poor. He owned the corner lot next to Manning's store, and was burned out there several times. He bought it at the first sale of the railroad. He buried one wife in Reno, and married again, but the second wife and he have not lived together for some time. He was a native of Ohio and 60 years of age. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock tomorrow. Daily Nevada State Journal January 22, 1884 Death of J. F. Cookes J. F. Cookes died at the country hospital Sunday, and his funeral will take place at 2 o'clock today. Mr. Cookes had been in very poor health for several years but was able to be around until within the past few months. His death, therefore was not unexpected. The history of the life of Mr. Cookes in Nevada is but a repetition of that of many others, up to day and down tomorrow. At one time he occupied a prominent position among the business men of Reno but he never fully recovered, financially, from losses sustained by the last big fire and as his worldly possessions slowly passed from his grasp, his health also gradually gave way, until he finally reached the station of an invalid bankrupt and ended his life an object of charity in the county hospital.
