Reno Evening Gazette, Nov. 18, 1880
Died.

Chatfield- In Reno, Nov. 18, 1880, Richard E. Chatfield, aged 55 years.

Funeral to-morrow at ten o'clock

Death of R.E. Chatfield

Richard E. Chatfield died suddenly this morning. He was sleeping with A.J.

Rowland, and about four o'clock awakened the latter and complained of being

very sick. Mr. Rowland went for a doctor and roused Dr. Bergman, who said he

was unwell, but would call at six o'clock. At five o'clock Mr. Chatfield was

dead. He is said to have habitually used morphine, and some persons

conjecture that his death resulted from the effects of the drug. Mr.

Chatfield was a native of England, the son of a London attorney. He began

life on the stage, as an actor and in the character of manager. Coming to

this country, he was for some years a non-commissioned officer in the U.S.

Navy. He engaged in merchandise business in Portland, Orebon, and afterwards

in Virginia City. Mr. Chatfield had seen many ups-and-downs in the world and

died without a dollar. He leaves no family of his own. Two sisters of his

are living in England, and he had a brother somewhere.

The Coroner's inquest this afternoon resulted in a verdict of death from

natural causes.
