Lovelock Man Sends Bullet Into Brain
Alex. Borland, President First National Bank, Takes Own Life Last Night
Temporary Insanity and Ill Health Believed to Have Been Cause
Lovelock, Nev. Jan. 19- This community was sadly startled yesterday afternoon by
the tragic suicide of Alex Borland, at his home in the western part of town.
The fatal shot was fired at about 5 o'clock in the evening. Borland was alone
in his room when the rash deed was done, and only his mother was in the house
with him.
The position of the body when found indicated that he had placed his head under
the mattress to muffle the sound, pointed the 38-caliebre revolver at his temple
and pulled the trigger. It must have been some minutes after when his mother
happened in the room and found the lifeless remains. She was almost distracted
by the tragedy. She rushed to summon aid. P.C. Biddleman, residing in an
adjoining building on the ranch, was the first to give aid and he came down
after doctors and friends.
Death must have been instantaneous, for the bullet entered just above the right
ear and lodged in the left ear. No cause for the rash act, except temporary
insanity and ill-health, can be thought of.
Deceased was a retired sheepman, president of the First National bank and
belonged to the Masonic, Odd Fellows and K. of P. orders. He was unmarried and
in comfortable circumstances. He had not been in the best of health for some
time. He had but recently returned from a trip to the coast.
His tragic death has nothing to do with the condition of the bank of which he
was president. That institution is sound and substantial in very way.
The coroner was summoned this morning and took the testimony of his mother at
the house and adjourned till 1 o'clock this afternoon. The date of the funeral
has not been set, but it will be in charge of the fraternal orders of which he
was a member. The body will be taken to Reno tonight for burial.
A few days ago, John Borland, who resides in Reno, received a letter from the
deceased stating that he was in bad health and intimating that he was greatly
discouraged.
In addition to his brother, John, the dead man leaves a brother, W. B. Borland,
and a sister Mrs. T.S. Wendt, in this city, and a sister Mrs. Alice Taylor, who
resides in San Francisco.

Borland Funeral
The funeral of the late Alexander Borland, who died at Lovelock night before
last as the result of a pistol wound, inflicted by his own hand while he was
suffering from ill health, took place this afternoon at 2 o'clock from Masonic
temple in this city.
The funeral service was conducted according to Masonic ritual and was most
impressive. There was a large attendance as the deceased was known throughout
the state, he being a substantial business man and banker, possessing many
friends, won by his personality. The interment was in Masonic cemetery.
