COACH,TEACHER BEASLEY, 93, DIES

Seven-decade career included 38-year stint at Reno High

RENO; Longtime Reno baseball coach and teacher Bud Beasley, who mentored
thousands of Northern Nevada students over a 70-year career, died Saturday at
his home. He was 93.

"He was an inspiring man," said state Sen. Bill Raggio, R-Reno, a 1944 graduate
of Reno High School, where Beasley coached and taught for 38 years.

Beasley was known for his good humor, storytelling and genuine affection for
his students.

"It was just a genuine pleasure to be associated with this man," said Reno's
Ken Fujii, who played football, basketball and baseball for Beasley and later
joined him on the Reno High coaching staff.

Born in Melrose, N.M., in 1910, Beasley was raised in Santa Cruz, Calif., where
he was a star athlete.

He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he played football,
basketball and baseball. His teaching career began as a student teacher a year
before he graduated in 1934.

Beasley joined the Reno High School staff in 1936 and played professional
baseball during the summers.

He left Reno High in 1974 but continued teaching physical education to special
needs children at several area schools. He also taught history and American
government at an alternative high school for at-risk students.

He continued teaching until he became ill last year.

Beasley and his wife of 67 years, Nellie, cared for dozens of foster children
through the years and adopted 17 children, friends and family said.
