BACCUS, Frank

"Aged Negro Dies in Reno"

A dispatch from Reno sates that Frank BACCUS, a giant Negro, aged 118,
who drove freight teams between Placerville and Sacramento 60 years ago,
died of senile gangrene yesterday at the Nevada State Insane Asylum near
Reno.

John HAWTHORNE, aged 82 years, knew BACCUS at Sacramento sixty years ago.
He was then 6 feet 8 inches tall, weighing over 250 pounds, and was
apparently about 60 years of age.

BACCUS stated that he remembered when MADISON was inaugurated president in
1809, when 15 years old, so that his birth must have occurred about 1794.
He accompanied his master in the Black Hawk War of 1832. In 1850 he came
from Missouri to Placerville. He worked out his bondage and then worked
as a freighter for DELUCE, who ran a store for many years at Placerville.
BACCUS came to Nevada in the '50's before there was a Reno.
