The OBITUARY OF DR. JOHN WILLIAM WARNICK, MD
The Johnsonburg Press, April 12, 1935
Widely Known Local Physician Died Friday
Had Been in Ill Health for over a year
Had Practiced Here for 30 Years
Funeral from Presbyterian Church Funeral services for Dr. J. W.
Warnick, widely known Johnsonburg physician who died Friday evening
at this home on Bridge Street after an illness of over a year, were
held yesterday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church. Many friends
and associates of long standing gathered to pay tribute in his
memory at the last rites conducted by Rev. N. B. Wilson, pastor of
the church. Burial was at Wardvale Cemetery.
A practicing physician for nearly forty years, most of that time in
Johnsonburg, his health forced his retirement over a year ago and he
was succeeded by his son, Dr. Richard D. Warnick. Since that time
recurring attacks taxed his strength and vitality so much that his
condition became critical some six weeks ago. His death at the age
of 71 was attributed to generalized arteriosclerosis and diabetes
mellitus. Dr. Warnick besides being a member and one of the
organizers of the Elk County Medical Society, was affiliated with
the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American College of Physicians
and Surgeons, and was a member of the I.O.O.F., and the Presbyterian
Church. He was one of the outstanding members of his profession in
this end of the State and though the fact is not generally realized,
he was recognized as a noted obstetrician and was attending physician
at over two thousand births.
Dr. John William Warnick was born in Clarion County
in November 1863, a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Warnick. He received
his education at Edinboro Teachers College and afterwards was
graduated from Western University of Pennsylvania Medical School,
now the University of Pittsburgh, with the Class of 1896.
He began practice in Reynoldsville where he remained for a year,
going to Glen Hazel about 1898. He came to Johnsonburg in 1905 and in
his practice here for nearly 30 years made many life long
friends. Confidence in his ability as a doctor was expressed by the
people of Johnsonburg and of Elk County in many ways. He was for a
long time Medical Inspector of Elk County, medical examiner of the
Johnsonburg Public Schools, served as examiner on the Draft Board
during the World War, and for twenty years was physician to the
Johnsonburg Board of Health. The survivors are his widow, Mrs.
Claribel Warnick, one daughter, Lucretia, Mrs. Carl B. Clark, of
Cleveland, Ohio; sons, Dr. Julian R. Warnick and Dr. Richard D.
Warnick of Johnsonburg; Dr. John W. Warnick of Lakewood, Ohio; and
two grandchildren, Richard K. Warnick and John W. Warnick III.
Also four brothers, Wilson A. Warnick and James Warnick of Pittsburgh,
Dr. Edward Warnick of Rimersburg and Grant R. Warnick of Kane.
Pallbearers were A. A. Johnson, John Friberg, H. K. Koons, W. E.
Heckendorn, J. L. Kerr and Fred Harker.
Out of town people here for the funeral were Wilson Warnick and son
Edward, James Warnick of Pittsburgh; Angus Warnick, Punxsutawney; Dr.
and Mrs. Edward Warnick, Kenneth Bailey, Hawthorne; Mr. and Mrs. Grant
Warnick, Kane; Mrs. Hill and son Robert, Scottdale, Homer Ressler and
son Homer, Johnstown; Miss Mary Lichtenfels, Pitcarn; Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Clark, Cleveland; Dr. John W. Warnick, Lakewood, Ohio. The Elk
County Medical Society was represented by Dr. L. L. Hobbs, Jr., Dr.
Gerald J. Hayes, Dr. J. E. Rutherford, Dr. Madera, all of Ridgway;
Dr. Leo Hayes, Force; Dr. A. C. Luhr, St. Marys; Dr. S. T. McCabe,
Dr. N. R. Benner of this place. Also a group of graduate nurses
from Elk County General Hospital, Ridgway.
