  JAMES ELMER BUTTS, director of the Morrison Cove Vocational School, is a 
native of Altoona, Pa., where he was born in 1891, a son of W. A. and Alice 
(Bowser) Butts, both deceased and both natives of Morrison Cove. Mr. Butts 
obtained his early education in the public schools of Bedford County, graduated 
from Juniata Academy in 1916, and won the degree of bachelor of arts from 
Juniata College in 1920. In 1925, he completed work at Columbia University which 
gave him the degree of master of arts. In 1920, Mr. Butts came to the Morrison 
Cove Vocational School as a teacher and at the end of three years was appointed 
assistant director. In 1925, he became director of the institution and has since 
continued in that capacity. He has been coach of the athletics teams of the 
school since 1920 and takes a deep interest in athletic matters. He is a 
communicant of the Church of the Brethren. In 1925, Mr. Butts was united in 
marriage to Gladys Pyle, of Scottville, Pa., she being a daughter of G. D. and 
Cora Pyle.
