  JOHN C. CALHOUN - In his association with the State-wide interests of the 
Shaffer Stores Company, Inc., as the vice-president of that organization 
whose headquarters are at Altoona, Mr. Calhoun is known as one of the 
leading men of business enterprise in this section of the country.  His 
responsibilities are those of an official in a concern that has the record 
of a steady and remarkable growth from small beginnings to its present place 
of importance in the mercantile world.  Mr. Calhoun has a broad interest, 
too, and a full belief in the advancing community with its business, civic, 
and social life in the van of progress in this section  of the State.  He is 
the son of Dr. Christopher P. Calhoun, who was born in Evert [Everett], and 
of Mary C. Calhoun, who is a native of Centerville, Bedford County.  Dr. 
Christopher P. Calhoun was a practicing physician to the time of his death, 
in 1904; he was a veteran of the Civil War, and member of the Grand Army of 
the Republic; he has served as a lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Volunteers.
  John C. Calhoun was born November 7, 1880, at Centerville, and he attended 
the public and the high schools of Altoona.  He started upon his business 
career in the clerical department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, so 
continuing until 1910, when he first became associated with the Shaffer 
Stores Company, in the capacity of clerk.  In 1917, he was appointed vice-
president of the corporation.
  Mr. Calhoun's fraternal affiliations are with all the Masonic bodies 
including the Scottish Rite, and also is a member of Jaffa Temple, Ancient 
Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; and he is president of the Lions 
Club, the Shrine Luncheon Club, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.  He 
attends the Lutheran Church.
  John C. Calhoun married, December 31, 1910, Irene A. Bortz, who was born 
in Allentown, and they are the parents of a daughter, Dorothy K. Calhoun.
