Laura Etta Shoemaker died January 10, 1939
Mrs. Laura Etta Shoemaker, for many years a well known resident of Porter
township, Clarion county, died at 11:00 oclock, Tuesday morning, January
10, 1939 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harvey C. Miller, of Brookside,
West Virginia. She was 79 years of age.
She had gone to Brookside last fall to visit her daughters, Mrs. Miller and
Mrs. S.S. Campbell of Martins Ferry, Ohio. She became ill about a week ago
at the Miller home. However, she had been in declining health for some
years.
Mrs. Shoemaker was born in Armstrong county February 10, 1860, the daughter
of John and Caroline Pence. September 25, 1877 she was married to Davis G.
Shoemaker who passed away December 23, 1932. She was a member of the
Leatherwood Baptist church.
Four daughters and three sons survive, namely: Mrs. D.M. Divins, Sligo;
Mrs. E. Ford Wilson, East Brady, Pa; Mrs. H.C. Miller, Brookside, W. Va.;
Mrs. S.S. Campbell, Martins Ferry, O.; Claude E. Shoemaker, Atwater O.;
Thomas B. of New Bethlehem, and Dr. John Shoemaker of Rimersburg.
Thirty-one grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great great
grandchild survive. Of her fathers family, three sisters and two brothers
survive; Mrs. E.W. Marshall, Pittsburgh; Mr. F.J. Marshall and Mrs. Zella
Pence, New Bethlehem; B. M. pence, of Clarion, and Meade Pence of Mahoning,
Pa.
The body was taken to Howard Wilson funeral home in Bridgeport where
services were held Wednesday evening at 8:15 oclock, conducted by Rev. J.E.
Scott of Thomson M.E. church., Thursday morning the body was taken to the
home of her daughter, Mrs. E.F. Wilson of East Brady, where brief funeral
services were conducted at 1:00 oclock Friday afternoon., followed by
additional services at 2:00 oclock in the Squirrel Hill Presbyterian church
conducted by Revs. Gerald Palmer, pastor and Rev. H. T. Chisholm of the East
Brady Presbyterian church. Interment took place in the Squirrel Hill
cemetery.
