John Craig Shields died at his home in St. Petersburg, Thursday morning of
last week at 10:45 oclock. March 14 he celebrated his 94th birthday. He
had remarkably good health until about three weeks ago when he had an attack
of heart failure from which he never fully recovered.

He was twice married. His first wife was Hannah Porterfield, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. George Porterfield, pioneer residents of Venango County. To

of Emlenton; two brothers and one half-brother, J.W. Shields of Prospect,
N.Y,; E.W., of Muncie, Ind,; and W.R. Garner of Buffalo, N.Y.

Some years ago he was again married to the widow who survives him, Mrs.
  Amanda Petticorn, of Cambridge Springs.

Mr. Shields spent the greater part of his life on his farm located a few
miles from Emlenton. He was interested in all civic and public affairs and
served as county commissioner and justice of the peace for many years.

His funeral services were held at his home in St. Petersburg Sunday
afternoon, May 12, at 2 oclock. Interment was held in the cemetery at
  Callensburg.
