Hugh Smith, descendant of the earliest settlers of
Greene county, Penna, and among its most prominent citizens,
was born on Smith Creek in Franklin township, January 26,
1832.
His grandfather, Thomas Smith, was the first settler
on the creek which bears his name.
Mr Hugh Smith is a son of Vincent Smith and Elizabeth
Bell Smith, the former a native of this county and the
latter of Virginia. His father, who was of Irish descent,
was born in 1791 and died in 1884. His family consisted of
ten children of whom the subject of our sketch is the
youngest of those now living. He was reared on the farm and
has made a successful farmer. He is the owner of a fine farm
of 400 acres where he now resides.
Mr Smith was married in his native county to Miss Mary
E Lemley, daughter of John Lemley and Jane Hennen Lemley.
Mrs SmithÕs parents were descendants of the early settlers
of the county, and of German and English origin.
