      Norval Laidley was born in Cumberland Township, this 
county, May 4, 1829. He is a son of T H Laidley, being the 
oldest in their family of twelve children. He was reared in 
Carmicheaels, receiving his education in the old Greene 
Academy. Early in life he learned the saddler's trade, 
serving an apprenticeship in Carmichaels, where he soon 
engaged in the business for himself and continued therein 
for twelve years. He afterwards started a general store in 
company with his younger brother, A D Laidley, to whom he 
sold his interest in 1876 and left him the sole proprietor 
of their merchandising establishment.
