Bates Emanuel Beall, overseer of the poor of Greene County, Penna, was born in Monongahela Township, this county, December 31, 1819, and is a son of Thomas Beall and Marian Engales Beall. His father was a native of Loudon County, Virginia, and his mother was born in Greene County, Penna. They were of English and German extraction. Emanuel Beall's grandfather, William Beall, was a pioneer settler of Greene County, Penna, and his maternal grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The subject of this sketch is next to the oldest in a family of eleven children. He remained on the farm with his parents until he was near twenty four years of age, then located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, where he engaged in farming and stock raising. Mr Beall has made his own way in the world, and at present is the overseer of the poor of this county. He takes an active interest in the public schools, and has served a number of years as school director. In 1869 he returned to his native county and settled in Dunkard Township where he still resides. He has made the raising of fine sheep a specialty and has met with great success in his business. Mr Beall has been three times married, and is the father of eleven children: John T Beall; Bertha J Beall, wife of Daniel Morris; William J Beall; Charlotte Beall; Martha Beall; Barnet Beall; Nancy Beall; George W Beall; Andrew J Beall; Miriam Beall and Columbus Beall. Mr Beall is a faithful member of the Baptist Church of which he is clerk.
