  MRS. FADDIS, CARMICHALES, DIES AT 99
  
  The oldest resident of Carmichaels, Mrs. Bertha Darrah Faddis, 99, died in the 
  Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Fla., yesterday morning.
  Mrs. Faddis resided with a daughter, Mrs. Henry S. (Dorothy) Conway, for the 
  past several months in Sarasota.
  She was the last living person who attended the Greene Academy in Carmichaels, 
  (now being restored as an art museum), and was a charter member of the Greene 
  Academy of Arts.
  The daughter of the late William Johnson and Ellen Richey Darrah, she resided 
  in the same house at 300 N. Market St., Carmichaels, since the age of five. 
  She was married to the late John R.(S) in 1897. He died in 1937.
  She was well-known for her eagerness to learn new things and always made the 
  remark, "I'm one person who doesn't have time to loaf." She proved this when 
  she learned ceramics at the age of 98.
  She was the first Republican committeewoman in Carmichaels and during World 
  War II she was hired at the Defense Plant in Latrobe at the age of 64. She was 
  told they didn't hire past 50, but because of her ability she was given 
  employment. She was also a member of the union there. Mrs. Faddis was also the 
  oldest member of the First United Methodist Church.
  Besides her daughter, she is survived by two grandchildren; Dr. Richard Conway 
  of Denver and Mrs. John (Patricia) Wain of Handover (Andover), N.J.. There are 
  five great grandchildren. Mrs. Steven(Eleanor) McCann and Jean Darrah, 
  nieces,and both of Carmichaels, also survives.
  Friends are being received in the Paul Lesako Funeral Home, Carmichaels, 
  Friday after 1 p.m. until Saturday at 2 p.m. the hour of service, with Rev. 
  Bernard Shuey, officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Point Cemetery, 
  Carmichaels.
