John's Township, was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany in 1818, a son
of George and Christina (Krauser) Muench. The father was born in
1777 and died in 1827; he was a minister by profession. His wife was
born in 1779 and died in 1841. Of their family of eight children
Martin was the seventh. He was educated in his native country, and
in 1841 came to America and settled in Warren County, Mo., but five
years later moved to near Newport, Franklin Co., on a farm. In 1855
he bought eighty-nine acres one half miles from the city of Washing-
ton, and for four years ran a dairy where he now lives. In 1859 he
married Miss Alvina Knecht, who was born in Germany, December 19,
1835, and came to the United States in 1858. Seven children were the
fruits of this marriage: Clara, George, William, Annie, Ludolph,
Charlotte and Alvine. Mr. Muench has sold a portion of his farm and
now owns fifty-four acres. He is a Republican in politics, and a
highly respected citizen.
