Biographical Sketch of Joseph A. Mintrup, Franklin County, Missouri

Joseph A. Mintrup, publisher of the "Franklin County Observer," was
born in St. Louis County, Mo., in the year 1862, and is the son of
Francis and Mary (Narup) Mintrup, natives of Hanover, Germany, born
in 1823 and 1839, respectively.  The father came to America when a
young man, settled in St. Louis, where he engaged in draying, and
after that in general merchandising.  Later on, he purchased a farm
in St. Louis County, and embarked in farming and stock raising in
which he was very successful.  In 1869 he came to Washington and 
entered into the planing and lumber business.  He died in 1871. The
mother is now living in Washington.  To their marriage were born 
eight children, our subject being the fourth.  He was educated in
the Catholic schools in Washington, and for three years attended St.
Mary's College, in Kansas, finishing his course with great credit to
himself.  His exemplary conduct while at school made him a favorite
with all.  In 1877 Mr. Mintrup finished his collegiate course, carry-
ing with him the highest honors of his class.  Returning to Washing-
ton, he began clerking but at the end of eighteen months commenced
his apprenticeship in a printing office.  In 1882 and 1887 he was
engaged as compositor on State work, working for the Jefferson City
Tribune Company.  Mr. Mintrup is fully coversant with typographical
work, and one of the best printers in the State.  In April, 1887, he
became publisher of the "Franklin County Observer," his partner being
J. William Kahmann.  He is a firm Democrat in politics.
