Biographical Sketch of Philip Hendrich, Franklin County, Missouri

Philip Hendrich, retired capitalist, of Washington, Mo., is a native 
of Baden, Germany, born in 1833, and the son of Louis and Mary (Wollf)
Hendrich.  The father was born about 1792, and was a brewer by trade.
He died in 1852.  His wife was born in 1801, and is yet living.  Of 
the nine children born to their marriage Philip is the seventh.  He
was educated in his native country, and at the age of seventeen com-
menced learning the mechanic's trade.  After becoming a skillful work-
man he obtained employment in various cities of Germany and Prussia,
but in 1854 emigrated to the United States and worked one year in 
Philadelphia.  The following two years he worked in machine shops in 
St. Louis, and in 1857 located at South Point, Franklin Co., Mo., and
he and his brother, Frederick, now president of Washington Bank, 
established a sawmill, planing-mill and box factory, and for thirty-
five years have successfully carried on the combined business, employ-
ing from twenty to thirty-five men, and doing an extensive business.
Mr. Hendrich is a shrewd business manager, and conducted his financial
affairs so ably that he became quite well off in this world's goods.
In 1885 he disposed of his milling interests; in 1866 he moved to
Washington, where he erected a beautiful residence in the outskirts of
the city, and where he now lives a quiet and retired life.  In 1867 he
married Miss Emma J. Krotzsch, daughter of Gottfried Krotzsch.  Mrs.
Hendrich was born in St. Louis, and to her marriage were born four
children: Charles, Emil, Ida and one child, named Philip, who died
when one year and eight months old.
