The Brewton Rifles
Brewton's first National Guard was known as the Brewton Rifles. The picture above was taken some time during the early 1900's, probably about the time that Mr. G.W. L. Smith was a captain in the guard, Mr. Burke Hayes, a first lieutenant and Mr. Hub Rankin a second lieutenant.
Mr. Rankin helped to organize the Rifles which were officially Company G of the Alabama National Guard. The Unit saw some duty in New Mexico at the time the American government was having trouble with Mexico's Villa. Mrs. Esther Downing presented the Rifles with a flag which she made and the affair was honored with a dinner. Can you identify any of the men pictured above?
